How can I let Mother’s Day slip past without a special shout out to all the dedicated swim moms out there? In recognition of this special commitment to the role of motherhood, I’ve made a list of just a few of the crazy things that a swim mom does:

  • sits patiently for hours on hard bleachers watching swim practices
  • ignores fashion trends in order to wear matching team t-shirts
  • gets up at 4:30 a.m. to get swimmers to morning practice
  • navigates to hidden aquatic centers in unknown destinations
  • volunteers for fund raising, hospitality, and party planning
  • never complains about doing without in order to pay for swimming
  • crams family vacations into away meets by visiting local attractions
  • carpools swimmers to two-a-day practices
  • fights off other swim moms for the best view from the bleachers
  • stands for hours in the hot summer sun timing at meets
  • uses vacation days to attend swim meets
  • convinces friends and family that her child chose this sport
  • makes meals and snacks 5-10 times a day for hungry swimmers
  • replaces lost (expensive) swim gear
  • dries tears and gives heartfelt words of encouragement
  • shows restraint when talking to the coach after a disappointing meet   (O.K. Maybe not that last one but nobody's perfect!)

  1. In america, Mother's Day is celebrated on the next Weekend of May. In a few countries it was modified to dates which were significant to almost all religion, or even to historical dates.
