Swimming Pool Cake for Celebrations

Swim teams like their celebrations. From pasta parties before a big meet to the swimmer who chooses to celebrate his or her birthday with the team. And every celebration needs a swimming pool cake!

This is a cake from Jackson’s 12th birthday. I started by ordering a large sheet cake from the bakery with blue frosting to mimic the water in a swimming pool. I took over from there by decorating the cake with lane ropes made from yellow M & Ms and starting blocks made from squares of white chocolate. Teddy Grahams were used to represent the swimmers going each direction in the pool. Have you ever noticed that not all Teddy Grahams are shaped the same? Their little graham cracker arms are in different positions which made them ideal for this swimming pool cake! As a novice cake decorator, I was pleased with how it turned out. Plus the good thing about swimmers’ appetites is they are not picky when it comes to food.

I recently found a delicious recipe and clever decorating ideas for the swimming pool cake pictured below from Miss CandiQuik at
Her cake has a baked pie crust bottom with a no-bake cheesecake mixture for the filling. Gelatin gives the cake its blue hue. Candy necklaces represent the lane ropes which look very authentic! She uses the same white chocolate squares for starting blocks as I did. Her swimmers are made from pretzel pieces used for arms and legs with chocolate covered candies for their heads. She even offers free printable flags to hover over the cake. (This is a detail that will be appreciated by backstrokers.)

I have no problem admitting Miss Candiquik's version of a swimming pool “takes the cake,” but I still think those Teddy Grahams make great little swimmers!
